Need Help?

FAQs

People come to counselling often because they want to improve aspects of their lives. They may want to solve a problem, make a decision, or better understand themselves. We will work together to explore your feelings and concerns and the changes you want to make. When we both understand your concerns we will team up to develop ways to meet your goals for counselling.

Counselling has benefits and risks. When counselling is effective, clients report a variety of positive changes including better mood, increased energy, improved decisions making skills, better problem-solving skills, higher self-esteem, self-understanding, relief from challenging symptoms and patterns of behaviour, and positive relationships with others.

Counselling may involve some risks. You may experience uncomfortable feelings, recall or talk about distressing incidents and memories. Oftentimes change may be accompanied by challenging consequences. For example gaining self-understanding may lead to changes in the dynamics of your relationships with others.

You determine how many sessions you want when you come to see me. The most important factor for effective counselling is that you feel understood and your counsellor is a good fit for you.

Clients will typically see me weekly or bi-weekly for 6 to 12 sessions. However, a few sessions may be all you need with a check in at a later date depending on the issue you bring to counselling.

You can share everything you wish to share with me. I am not an expert in all areas so if I think you may be better helped by seeing another professional I will be happy to provide you with other resources and referrals.

Everything except for the exceptions below is kept confidential and will not be shared with anyone else without your informed, voluntary and written consent.

The three exceptions are:

  • If you are in danger of hurting yourself or others
  • When there is suspicion or disclosure of abuse to vulnerable persons, such as a child, an elderly person or a person with disabilities

  • When records are subpoenaed by a court order

I will do my best to discuss these situations with you before I involve other professionals.

Currently I only offer online counselling sessions via Skype and Zoom.
